The bells on Santa’s sleigh are ringing ever closer, which means it’s time to start thinking about your Christmas decorations for this year. A festive display in your front garden is the perfect way to draw the eye of neighbours and passers-by, with a whole host of options available to create a truly magical space for the holidays.

Read on for our top tips on transforming your garden into a Christmas wonderland this holiday season.

Step 1 – Prepare the Garden

Before you start throwing lights up on the trees and putting decorations out on the lawn, it’s a good idea to tidy up the garden with some routine maintenance first. Clear up any tree debris and leaves that may have landed on your lawn throughout winter to keep the grass clear for your decorations.

Now might also be a good time to protect your plants – Christmas decorations may leave them vulnerable to damage, so follow the tips we mentioned in last month’s article [link to November’s article] to keep them safe throughout the season.

Step 2 – Have a theme

A bit of planning can go a long way, so picking a theme before you buy your decorations will help make sure your garden looks great when fully decorated. A few theme options you could go for include:

  • Santa’s Grotto
  • A White Christmas
  • Nativity Scene
  • Animal Christmas
  • Red, green and gold
  • Animated lights
  • Candy cane garden
  • Rustic Christmas

Step 3 – Buy your decorations

Icicles, snow, white Christmas lights and baubles can be ideal for a White Christmas theme or the setting for Santa’s Grotto, whilst a red and green or rustic Christmas theme may tempt you towards wreaths, ornamental twigs, and small Christmas shrubs that you can dot around the front lawn.

Whatever theme you choose, it’s essential that you ensure your decorations are safe for the outdoors. Your lights must be suitable for exterior use, and you should have a safe outside electrical outlet to power your lights.

Step 3 – Let it snow

Nothing says Christmas more than a beautiful blanket of snow across the ground. You can buy artificial grass snow blankets that emulate fresh snow perfectly, without putting your plants or the environment in harm’s way.

You can also buy fake snow to frost your windows and porch area, creating a suitably chilly outdoors environment that you can enjoy from the cosy warmth of your home indoors.

Step 4 – Light it up

Christmas lights are a fantastic way of transforming your front garden into a truly mesmerising festive sight for passers-by. You can choose from a huge range of styles: netted, fairy lights, icicles, and even accessories for your garden trees. Place netted lights over your shrubs and trees for a magical look, and you can even string lines of fairy lights through any large trees in your front garden to make it really stand out.

Lights can also be used for a small outdoor Christmas tree, or for decorations such as Santas, Elves, and Christmas animals to create your desired garden theme.

Step 5 – Get the trees involved

Involving your garden’s natural props is the perfect way to create some impressive dimension in your front garden Christmas decor. Placing lighting on or around your trees and shrubs will really draw attention to your garden; consider some icicle Christmas lights to wrap around a tree’s branches for a festive look.

Your trees and shrubbery can also be a great place to hang decorations – from baubles to ribbons and wreaths, you can get as creative as you like when jazzing up your shrubbery. If you don’t have many large bushes or trees in your garden, fear not: artificial light trees or ‘bushes’ are a perfect way to add some nature and festive fun to your front garden.

Step 6 – Animal Ornaments

For an injection of fun into your front garden Christmas decorations, why not pick up some topiary animals for your lawn display? Many festive-themed topiary animals come with LED lights i
nstalled to illuminate your garden.

Opt for reindeers and a sleigh, penguins, or a mix of winter animals for a pretty display for everyone to enjoy!
