The Different Types of Turf

If you’re landscaping your garden, you’ve probably decided to buy a brand new turf to transform the look of your outdoor space. However, there are several types of turf to choose from, each suitable to a different type of environment, so making sure you have the right turf for your needs is important.

To make sure you make the right decision and get the most out of your turf, take a look at our buyer’s guide on the different types of turf below.

Family lawn turf/ hard wearing/ traditional

Several turf grass rollsTraditional turf, also known as hard wearing or family lawn turf, is one of the most popular options for many people and properties.

Pros include:

  • Easy to maintain – This type of turf is very forgiving in its needs, and will still look great with a more relaxed maintenance routine. We would still recommend mowing your lawn about once a week in the summer however, to keep the grass neatly groomed and well-kept.
  • Durable – Hard wearing grass can endure a lot of wear and tear, making it perfect for homes with children and pets, or properties that see a lot of foot traffic through the gardens.
  • Budget friendly – As the most popular turfing option, hardwearing turf is also one of the most budget friendly, ensuring you get a great looking lawn at a cost effective price.

Fine/ Ornamental /Deluxe turf

IMG_9501Fine turf, also known as ornamental turf, is composed of thin leaves in a uniform green colour, able to be mown close to the ground. This turf option is popular for display gardens, with pros including:

  • Looks great – Ornamental turf is designed to have a uniform green colour, and neat growth throughout its lifetime, ensuring a beautiful looking lawn all year round.
  • Grows well in most conditions – Fine turf is often made from a mix of grass types, meaning it is likely to grow well in most conditions in the garden, including in shady or dry areas. However, one factor to bear in mind is that with a more delicate, aesthetic look, some durability will be sacrificed. Fine turf is not as tolerant to wear and tear as hard wearing grass is, so may not be the best option if you wish to use the garden for children to play in, or for hosting events.
